Artistic expression in the church is not expendable entertainment.

Imagine Jesus sharing the gospel without stories, or trying to comprehend the sovereignty of God without the literary work of the book of Job. What if David did not write songs to speak of the depravity of man, the goodness of God, or the history of the nation of Israel? The church and art have shared an on-again, off-again relationship throughout the ages. Without art, we would not know God as we know Him today. The Word of God written, spoken, sung, performed, or painted, has been the primary vehicle through which He has propelled His gospel throughout the world and throughout the ages. God is a creative being and our creative expression is vital to the church not because of the effort of man, but because creativity taps into the very nature of God.

We may think our tribute is paid in secret in the dark recesses of our hearts, but it will out. That which dominates our imaginations and our thoughts will determine our lives, and our character. Therefore, it behooves us to be careful what we worship, for what we are worshipping we are becoming.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there. There is no such thing.

C. S. Lewis
